Sell my Ford

Ford KaFord can rightly claim to be true pioneers of the automotive industry, not only at industry level but in their appeal to a wide audience. Ford was and still is affordable, marketable, and highly desirable, but the sale price of a used Ford often doesn’t reflect its true value. Selling a Ford isn’t often as easy as one might think. Ford can suffer from high depreciation depending on the mileage and condition of the vehicle.

Ford MustangIf one day you suddenly realise “I want to sell my Ford!” then you might not be able to sell it for anywhere close to its true value. This is where the Car Buying Group can really help you out. We know how to maximize the value of your vehicle because we know what a great history that Ford has and what it means to own one.

The Rise of Ford

June 16, 1903 is a date that should be inscribed on the heart of all true motoring enthusiasts. The day that Henry Ford incorporated his motor company is one that heralded the beginning of a new era for cars, an era that truly got underway with the launch of the Model T just 5 years later. By perfecting the assembly line concept, the Ford Motor Company changed the world of motor vehicle manufacturing forever and by 1920 were producing over a million cars a year. Ford knew that for the longest times, automobiles were out of the reach of common man, but with such efficient mass-production now an option, the company was able to sell to farmers, workers and car enthusiasts of all incomes. Sales soared, as did the number of hobbyist drivers.

Between 1917 and 1925, Ford established itself as a truly global automobile company, adding to the Canadian factory that was founded as early as 1904 with the opening of manufacturing plants in Ireland, England, France, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Argentina, South Africa and Australia. They did very well in Europe during this period, selling 250,000 Ford units in England alone.

The 1920s - 1940s, however, was a difficult period, firstly because of initial problems responding to consumer demand for innovation, and secondly because of the Great Depression and Second World War, when selling to the public naturally became extremely difficult.

The 1950s were considered by many to be the start of a golden era for Ford, with the launch of the iconic Thunderbird in 1955, hitting high-sales figures in 1958, selling nearly 39,000 that calendar year. The 60s saw the introduction of the Falcon and the Mustang in the USA but more importantly for us here in the UK, it was the decade in which the Cortina, Escort and Capri first appeared on British roads. Let’s now take a look at what happened in the UK from the 1970s onwards.Ford Escort

1970s - The Ford Classics

Mention the 1970s to any older automobile fan in the UK and two models will immediately spring to mind: the Ford Cortina and the Ford Escort. These two battled for pole position in the list of best selling cars throughout the decade, with the Escort playing second fiddle in every year apart from 1976. As a pair they occupied the top two sales spots continually from 1974 onwards.

The classic Mark III Cortina rolled off the production lines in October of 1970, bringing to British shores the curvy auto design trend that was then prevalent in Detroit. Its upswept body and fluted bonnet helped to give it what was known at the time as a coke bottle silhouette but both the Escort and the Cortina were to become markedly boxier in appearance later in the 1970s when updated models were released. Rally fans’ fondest memories of this decade are sure to include the fabulous Ford Escort RS1800, with its Cosworth BDE engine.

Other models of note from the 1970s include the Granada, Fiesta and the Ford Capri, the last of which first made an appearance in 1969. Its predecessor, the Ford Consul Capri, actually went on sale in 1962, but the 1969 Capri was the first of the line that would be instantly recognisable to any British Capri enthusiast today.

1980s - Sierra Dawn

The Cortina and Escort remained the two bestselling cars in the United Kingdom until 1983, when the Cortina was no longer in production. In July of 1982, Ford replaced the most popular car of the 1970s with the Sierra, which itself was always among the top 5 bestsellers in the UK throughout the 1980s. The Escort held the number 1 sales spot all the way from 1983 onwards, helped greatly by the completely redesigned Mark III that was launched in 1980 and which was voted European Car of the Year in 1981. Another big seller for Ford in the 1980s was the Fiesta, originally introduced in 1976, which was in the top 3 for almost all of the decade.

Whilst the Escort, Sierra and Fiesta dominated the charts for Ford in this decade, no overview of the company’s offerings in this period would be complete without a mention of the Ford Orion. Although it never achieved the same loyal following as its illustrious older siblings, the ever expanding market for new cars meant that Ford still managed to shift more than 3.5 million Orions in between 1983 and 1993.

1990s - Fiesta Fervor

If the 1970s and early 80s belonged to the Cortina and the Escort, the 90s was undoubtedly the decade of the Ford Fiesta. Ford’s classic supermini was the biggest selling car in 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 1998, and was in the top two for almost the entire decade. Motoring enthusiasts who were around in the 1980s were already familiar with the Fiesta, thanks to the second generation XR2 model, which although by no means the first hot hatch to hit the streets is probably the most fondly remembered by anybody who first started to drive in the UK in the 1980s. Ford introduced the third generation Fiesta in 1989, followed by the fourth generation in 1995.

Whilst Ford released a number of new models in this decade, including the Ka, the Puma, the Probe, the Galaxy, the Scorpio (a Granada replacement) and the Cougar, the two most memorable models that were launched in the 1990s were the Ford Mondeo, a replacement for the Sierra, and the Ford Focus.

2000-2013 - Ford’s New Focus

The Focus and Fiesta were Ford’s most popular models throughout this period, with the Mondeo a somewhat distant third but still enjoying healthy sales figures. The Focus was Britain’s biggest seller from 1999-2008 inclusive, only being knocked off the top spot by its stable mate, the Ford Fiesta, which has been in first place ever since. The Focus carried on Ford’s tremendous rallying tradition, which was firmly established with the Escort Mexico and RS models of the 70s and 80s, until it was replaced in 2011 by the Fiesta owing to a change in the technical rules.
